‘Photo-abjection’, Huijeong Jeong’s World of Art<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huijeong Jeong is making an announcement through her first solo exhibition that she is a full-fledged artist.
Her own style has been obtained so clearly this exhibition wouldn\u2019t be seen as her first solo exhibition. She obviously works within the field of photography.
however, she is profoundly expanding the feasibility of photography by breaking into an area of \u201cabjection\u201d with the maximum utilization of digital editing.
This is why I intend to call Huijeong\u2019s work as \u2018photo-abjection\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developed by Julia Kristeva, the concept of \u201cabjection\u201d refers to the experience you go through when encountered apparently with \u201cabject\u201d which provides \u2018repulsive attractiveness\u2019.
Those that need to be secreted\/excreted, but still to be excluded\/expelled due to their repulsiveness such as vomit, sticky sweat\/sperm, menstrual blood, a decomposing corpse, surface film formed over milk covered with black mold, all belong to the category of abject.
What is important for an object to act as \u2018abject\u2019 is not just its repulsiveness; rather it should be considered as a being attractive enough for its repulsiveness.
Repulsion here is the emotion in the ascending directions, from unconsciousness to consciousness, and attraction is the emotions in the descending directions, from consciousness to unconsciousness.
These emotions in two different directions are connected to form abject, and the realistic encounter with the abject makes abjection come into existence.
The former represents the direction of life utilizing death; the latter, the direction of death utilizing life.
However, it is impossible to identify one direction against the other in that these two directions are similar to Mobius strip. In other words, abject comes into existence at the macabre border where it is impossible to distinguish life from death, and so does the experience of abjection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huijeong\u2019s work constructs such abject without an exception, which enables the spectators to fall into the experience of abjection.
In fact, being alive is a metaphor of death, and death denotes life. For this reason, life and death are not clearly distinguishable in Huijeong\u2019s work.
In , for example, the windowsills and the scene behind them come to life by the moth perched on the windowsill;
the dead dog focused right in front in makes the whole scenery horribly alive.
The girls in are rather intensely staring at death with their eyes facing the audience while they are shyly sitting with their both hands together.
As depicted in the dead woman whose face is covered with red spots, and with a red apple, which looks like a metaphor of passionate love, on her forehead, is abruptly alive by her eyes towards the apple.
Overlapped with the five grave digging men in the background, this aliveness descends back to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The special motif of abject in her work that leads to the semantic crossover of life and death is a moth or a butterfly.
The existence of butterflies is extremely twofold. Although they are greatly attractive by their beautiful wings and their fluttering motion, butterflies maintain the characteristics of larvae in the body part, hairy and dirty.
As shown in , the horrifying beauty becomes even greater with a flock of butterflies devouring into a dead body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, butterflies turn into moths. The greyish brown wings of a moth and its shedding fine hair that chokes us and leads to stranglehold.
This is an exact symbol of macabre which brings us to death. Meanwhile, Huijeong relates this macabre of moths to joyfulness which seems obviously suspicious in that it is connected to macabre.
This is represented in .
The jovial liveliness of a woman dancing in her pink shoes is blended with a group dance of greyish brown moths, to be combined with the highest level of depression.
This work is a masterpiece in which the abject oriented surrealistic world is realized \u2018through repulsive attractiveness\u2019.
The every single element consisting of this work and their figures really come into their own: the wings of a lying bird half revealed through an open door, a human figure on four, reflected in the mirror on the left, as if in the middle of sexual act, a silhouette of a woman looking inside the room through the window, and a stopped grandfather clock shining with white tint.
is so perfect that it even makes you think computerized digital photographs are meant to emanate \u2018repulsive attractiveness\u2019 in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finely constructed without any redundancy, is the work intense enough to be compared with .
This work is doing an excellent job of representing the ironic paradox using a window, by contrasting the unconsciousness of an actual existence and the virtual reality reflected in the mirror.
Two legs still bare while covered in a blanket, a dog with its red tongue sticking out coveting the chasm between them, two masked female spectators in the mirror overlapped with the dog\u2019s voyeuristic desire,
and on top of all these, the miniaturized playground rides relocated into the room, the bland everyday landscape, dazzling sunlight drawn aside in the corner of the room although it seems it would fill up the whole room,
the stopped grandfather clock indicating the same hour as in .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to create a composition finely organized to such extent, an artist should be equipped with intellectual logics for cool-headed artistic composition as well as the intense power of an internal eye for abject which is so powerful that it blends life with death,
makes joyfulness and gloominess perfectly overlapped, freely crisscrosses consciousness and unconsciousness, and combines current erotism and voyeuristic cynicism.
Huijeong Jeong, as an artist, has acquired these two capabilities sufficient enough to unfold her world of art into work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What should be emphasized is the artist eye of hers spewing from inside of abject flamboyantly exhibited in her work.
The artist eye of Huijeong is proven to be cruel as shown in the works such as
horrifying enough along with the somewhat comical title, and in which two high school girls are conversing in a nonchalant manner with two bare legs abandoned right next to them, covered in plants depicted as trash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An artist eye needs to be cruel, which is prerequisite for overturn of the routine life that is extremely cruel.
Cruel eye combined with thoroughly calm touch, Huijeong Jeong successfully reaches a certain level of photo-abjection of her own.
What is left to do is to figure out how to completely eliminate the trace of artificiality which oozes out occasionally,
and also to continue on producing works of perfection such as ‘Her Dancing’ or ‘Under the Blanket’ .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
