벌거벗은 섬 Naked Island

Video installation, 11min / 2015 (remake 2024)

Naked Island is a panoramic immersive development project that approaches landscape not as a static background, but as a layered structure of time, memory, emotion, and embodied experience.

Rather than representing landscape, the work arranges multiple layers of time within a single island. Life and death, nature and civilization, consciousness and the unconscious coexist within this space. Here, landscape is no longer a fixed image, but a structure that continuously shifts and circulates.

Formally, the project draws from East Asian landscape painting and the compositional logic of handscrolls. Instead of a single fixed viewpoint, the gaze moves, unfolds, and flows across time and space. The panoramic format extends this moving vision, allowing the audience not simply to observe the landscape, but to pass through it.

The island holds the cycle of four seasons. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter are not only seasonal changes, but reflect layers of human time and experience. At the same time, day and night form a dual structure of consciousness and the unconscious, allowing the audience to encounter both the surface and the depth of the landscape.

In this work, sound is not background. It is a key device that opens another layer of the landscape. Distant and near sounds, day and night sounds, and the traces of memory overlap, allowing multiple temporalities to coexist within the same space.

Naked Island is currently in development and is open to expansion into XR, dome-based environments, and immersive spatial formats. Rather than remaining in a fixed form, the project exists as a landscape that continues to evolve through its relationship with space, audience, and technology.
